Biomass is renewable organic material from plants and animals which is used as fuel to produce electricity, steam or heat. It is a valuable form of clean renewable energy helping the world to transition away from fossil-fuel generated power. To be effective as biomass energy, the organic material can only be feedstock, agricultural waste or sustainable perennial crops.

Project information

Hanuman Agro Industries Limited (HAIL) owns and operates a paper mill located at Village Paragoan, Raipur district of Chhattisgarh State in the Central part of India. HAIL’s energy requirements was originally supplied by the Chhattisgarh State Electricity Board (Unified Indian Grid) and the total process steam requirement of around 9 TPH at 10 Kg/cm2 was being met by a 12 TPH coal fired boiler.

To transition its power requirements to sustainable renewable energy, HAIL set up a biomass captive cogeneration plant with a capacity of 2.5 MW power generation at their manufacturing facility. The project involved the installation of a 22 TPH FBC Boiler with the outlet steam parameters of 44 Kg/cm2 & 450+/-5oC Steam temperature and Multistage, impulse, nozzle governed bleed & extraction cum condensing type 2.5 MW capacity Turbo-Generator Set. The project consumes around 10% of the generation for auxiliary consumption and the rest is primarily used to meet the in-house power requirement, which is around 2.25 MW. The extraction steam from turbine outlet is also used for meeting the steam requirement of the paper mill.

The project has contributed to a small increase in direct local employment through skilled and unskilled labour to operate and maintain the cogeneration plant.

The demand for rice husk in the local area has benefitted rice millers and local farmers through increased prices.
